Here at MCC, we believe in letting the child’s spirit guide us. It is our goal to help children develop and nurture their intrinsic love of learning, their independence, and their sense of community. Located in picturesque Parkmerced in the southwest corner of San Francisco, the school is housed in state of the art facilities in a quiet neighborhood. Founded in 1976, the MCC has been serving the children and families of San Francisco for forty years. Founded in 1976 by Judith Flynn and Jean Nugent, the Montessori Children’s Center is a preschool serving children ages 2 – 6. The school has two classrooms, with children of mixed ages in each. MCC offers both a full day and half day program, as well as childcare before and after school. The full day program hours are 8:30 am – 3:00 pm. The half day program goes from 8:30 am – 12:30, and is limited to children under 3. Children are required to attend the school five days a week. We provide a full range of Montessori materials and activities in both classrooms. During the day, children are guided in their use of the Montessori teaching materials by the teachers and staff. Mr. Jack McBirney returned to San Francisco in 1971 after serving as a missionary to Newfoundland, Canada. His children had to attend public school. Because of the obstacles his family met, Mr. McBirney became burdened by the lack of Christian education in the beautiful city of San Francisco. With a vision to see, a faith to believe and courage to do so, he founded San Francisco Christian School in September of 1971. The need for this Christian education was realized by both Mr. Jack McBirney and the Board, and they prayed for 90 students to come to the school. On the very first day, 90 students came and enrolled! We went on to become one of the area's best private high schools. Grounded in the Marist Charism, French Tradition, and guided by the example of Mary: the mission of École Notre Dame des Victoires Catholic Community is to nurture the whole child spiritually, academically, socially, emotionally, and physically and to support a diverse group of learners who endeavor to develop an inclusive and compassionate world. In 1924, two Marist fathers, Père Henri Gerard, S.M. and Père Louis LeBihan, S.M., founded École Notre Dame des Victoires. Acting upon the encouragement of Archbishop Edward J. Hanna, they were eager to establish the school as a center of French culture – a Catholic school where students would learn French as well as English. The school, located at the site of the church for which it is named, opened on January 24, 1924 with a small enrollment. Although Notre Dame des Victoires began with these fourteen students, the formal opening of the school took place on August 18, 1924 with an enrollment that had grown to 123 students. At this time, Sister Mary Charles Lirette, C.S.J. was appointed principal. She remained in that position until 1946. The school was entirely staffed for many years by the Sisters of St. Joseph of Orange (CSJ). Today, while sisters are no longer present, the all lay staff continues to embrace the CSJ charism through their participation in the CSJ Educational Network which promotes Catholic identity, fosters personal and professional excellence, reverences the dignity of all persons, and educates for justice. In 1949, Père LeBihan, S.M. expanded the school to include five additional classrooms, a library, science laboratory, as well as a convent. In May 2006, the church of Notre Dame des Victoires celebrated its one hundred fiftieth anniversary. The school now has an enrollment of approximately 300 students, drawn from the greater Bay Area and representing many diverse ethnic backgrounds.

Our educational program encourages curiosity, exploration, cooperation, risk-taking, and a love of learning. It is integrated across academic disciplines and incorporates a project-based approach in which our students develop academic skills through inquiry and collaboration. At our most recent assembly, the Fourth Grade Sandpipers showed off their dramatic skills. They performed a play (written entirely by themselves) about farm workers who stand up for their rights by protesting the conditions they live under. The show was a tribute to legendary changemaker and activist Cesar Chavez, whom we honor with a special assembly every year around the time of his birthday (March 31). Our Spanish teachers, Sonia Pinto-Scherstuhl and Gabriela Martinez del Campo, used the inquiry learning cycle to shape the Sandpipers’ work on this project: tuning in, finding out, sorting out, going further, making conclusions, and taking action. They started out by studying the different types of food they eat and how they are produced. Next, their learning extended to the people involved in that process. Focusing on the farm workers who harvest fruits and vegetables in California, the students learned both about the unjust conditions in which they live and the work of those like Cesar Chavez who seek to bring justice. This inspired the play which they created for the assembly. Gabriela elaborated on some of the facts which the Sandpipers learned: “Many of these farm hands are children who work in the fields from the age of 12 and—illegally—even younger. They are under unjust conditions like working 12 hours a day, extreme heat, little pay, living in miserable housing, and irregular school attendance.” The students plan to do more work to raise awareness about this issue, an early step in their journey to speak up for what they see as right.
