    The Bush School

It is a pleasure to introduce you to the dynamic, inclusive, and joyful learning community of The Bush School. I encourage you to explore our website to learn more about the school and to visit Bush to see our mission — to spark in students of diverse backgrounds and talents a passion for learning, accomplishment, and contribution to their communities — in action. The Bush School provides a progressive, inquiry-based, student-centered program focused on participatory learning. This engaging learning environment is designed to produce caring and informed students, artists, athletes, thinkers, and citizens who aspire to live rewarding and purposeful lives. The adults in the Bush community regard safety, compassion, honesty, and scholarship as paramount, and imbue these virtues in their work with students. This has been true since the school's founding in Helen Taylor Bush's basement in 1924. We continue to honor her legacy by graduating students who are guided by the simple values upon which Mrs. Bush established the school — truth, beauty, and purpose. Although much has changed since 1924, our fundamental approach to teaching students remains as relevant now as ever. Bush students engage with our challenging and robust academic programs and are asked to confront and solve complex problems in the classroom and beyond in a variety of experiential opportunities throughout our campus, Seattle, and the world. As a result of these experiences, they learn how to make an impact on their community that is meaningful and enduring. As Seattle’s only K–12 independent school, we are in the enviable position of witnessing students’ emotional and intellectual maturation, and to share in their future successes. The Bush School is an exceptional place for children to grow and to learn. I am hopeful that you will visit our campus to see how our mission is brought to life daily by students and teachers. It is the best way for you to experience Bush. Sincerely, - Percy L. Abram, Ph.D.

    Seattle Country Day School

Dear Visitors, Welcome to Seattle Country Day School (SCDS). Our K–8 program exists to serve the learning and emotional needs of gifted children in Seattle and its surrounding communities. Since 1964, we have guided and challenged students whose needs are not always met in the traditional classroom environment. Our inquiry-based instructional program encourages creative problem-solving, requires the application of knowledge, and facilitates the generation of new ideas. Applying skills, intellect, and ideas in new and advanced ways differentiates us from most schools, where highly capable students are often given more or advanced assignments in an effort to address their learning needs. Our talented and highly knowledgeable faculty believe in depth over breadth, prioritize project-based learning, and provide our students with the time, tools, and attention they need to explore ideas, make mistakes, and try again. We feed our students’ curiosity, nurture their sense of wonder, and help them to develop the habits of mind necessary for academic and personal success. We also understand how important it is to attend to students’ social and emotional needs and to guide students on their journey from kindergarten to high school. Our Synapse program does just that. Synapse is a social-emotional learning (SEL) program that strengthens students’ resilience, self-knowledge, empathy, and ability to collaborate, while informing their understanding of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI). Each child is seen, known for their genuine self, and recognized for their potential to positively affect our world. The result is that students develop a true sense of belonging at SCDS and they know they are understood here. Just as DEI concepts are central to our Synapse program, DEI is also central to the school’s long-term aspirations. Building on work begun in 2019, SCDS recently launched a multi-year initiative called SCDS Next that aims to create a more racially and economically diverse and inclusive campus community. The benefits are clear: When children and teachers of different backgrounds and varying perspectives come together, their conversations are enriched, their learning is deepened, and their perspectives are widened. In turn, students are better-prepared for success in a challenging, interesting, and ever-more-diverse society. Warm and rigorous, inquiry-focused and SEL-aligned: That is Seattle Country Day School. Graduates of our program are welcome additions to high-school communities, not only because of their extraordinary intellect and academic preparation, but because of their strength of character and variety of interests. Upon graduation, they are well-prepared for the next part of their journey at whichever high school they choose. If you are the parent of a gifted child, or believe your child might be gifted, I encourage you to contact us. We would be happy to explore if SCDS would be a good school for your family. Sincerely, - Kimberly A. Zaidberg

    Westside School

On September 9, 1981, Westside School started as the Westside School for Young Children. It was founded by a group of educators and parents who wanted a positive and self-esteem building school experience for their children. The program grew steadily and Westside moved many times over the following years, outgrowing building after building as more students enrolled. Following a successful Capital Campaign that raised more than 4.2 million dollars, construction began early in 2013 on a complete renovation of the former Hillcrest Presbyterian Church in West Seattle’s Arbor Heights neighborhood. This space became our permanent home for our preschool through eighth grade programs. The new space is a naturally lit, child-centered, creative building that provides a collaborative learning environment for Westside School’s permanent home. Westside’s campus has 53,000 square feet of space dedicated to teaching and learning: 27 classrooms; light-filled, child-centered work spaces; a beautiful library; separate, team-oriented middle school classrooms; 500 seat auditorium; green space, and warm and inviting gathering spaces where students, teachers, parents and visitors can connect, share and meet. After five locations, hundreds of students and 37 years of stories, Westside has continued to grow and flourish, becoming the high quality center for learning that it is today.

    Dartmoor School

Developed by Dori Bower, the Dartmoor Method is built around respecting and deeply engaging students so they become the focus and driving force in their own schooling. The method begins with a thorough assessment of the student as a learner and culminates in a personalized course of study. While each program differs, there are shared traits that typify a Dartmoor education: Respectful: respect for the student is the start and end point of all Dartmoor programs Joyous: every person has the ability and the desire to learn; Dartmoor helps students rediscover academic success and regain their innate joy of learning Personalized: instructional and administrative staff get to know students personally and take an active interest in their overall success and wellbeing Diagnostic - prescriptive: assessment and school data help Dartmoor staff diagnose and prescribe for the specific needs of each student; this allows staff to understand and design for each student’s unique learning profile (level, pace, strengths, interests, needs) Holistic: consultations with the student and family, other educators, and professionals round out the data so that the educational team have a rich appreciation for the student’s profile Dynamic: while initial assessment drives the prescribed program, students benefit from the ongoing care and management of educators who understand how to ensure curriculum and instruction remain engaging, relevant, and appropriately challenging; Dartmoor has an exhaustive array of instructional strategies and curricular resources and significant expertise in working with diverse learning profiles Mastery-based: students work with a concept or skill until they master it at a rate of 80% or higher; mastery-based learning is the foundational method of human learning and the most effective for building skills, competency, and confidence. It allows Instructors to spend more time with students on areas of difficulty, while accelerating the pace on easier material The proof of the Dartmoor Method’s efficacy is practice-based residing in the success of thousands of students who have enrolled at Dartmoor since 1990 and continued on to achieve their educational and personal goals.
