    Challenger School

Our mission statement was written with a view of preparing children for life. But the traits we hope to develop in children are the same traits (self-reliance, self-worth, honesty, rationality, integrity, justice, productivity) we hope to find in our peers and associates. It is no surprise, then, that our mission statement applies not only to our work in the classroom, but also to how we manage ourselves and interact with our customers and coworkers. Our curriculum is designed to be consistent with the principles behind our mission statement. We expect these values to be taught and reinforced in the classroom and in our classroom management practices. We do not prescribe what our personnel must think or do in their personal lives, but we do expect them to manage and teach in a manner consistent with Challenger values. It is our goal to operate every aspect of Challenger School in a manner consistent with our mission and the principles on which it is based. It is our hope that publishing and discussing Challenger beliefs and values will inspire all those associated with us to consider the importance of ideas in their lives. Ideas define our purposes, motives, and practices of living. Without our own ideas, which we take seriously, we drift on whatever current others may sweep us into.

    St. Paul's Episcopal School

Our school setting in the heart of Oakland allows us to embed diversity, equity, and inclusion and community engaged learning in the curriculum. It’s simply part of the air we breathe and how we teach. Our students develop skills, purpose, and empathy with which to navigate the larger social landscape, and carry forward the values of curiosity, service, partnership, and community engagement. Every child at St. Paul’s is honored and valued for who they are -- their perspective, positionality, and experience -- as they come into the school, move through their tenure, and when they graduate. Our students see themselves represented in the texts they read, history they study, math problems they solve, labs they explore in science, and the art and music they create. They quickly learn that honing their academic skills provides them the tools and resources to gradually articulate and define their sense of purpose. St. Paul’s commitment to socioeconomic and racial diversity is comprehensive and intentional, as is the school’s connection to the broader community. Using the surrounding Lake Merritt neighborhood as an extension of campus, students and teachers are immersed in the local landscape. How we, as a school community, are connected to, engage with, and represent the multifaceted community of Oakland is central to our mission and values. I invite you to learn more about St. Paul’s and our program.

    Julia Morgan School for Girls

Julia Morgan School for Girls is the first and only all-girls middle school in the East Bay. Research demonstrates that girls attending coeducational schools do not receive equal opportunities to excel academically and socially. According to the American Association of University Women, “curricula continue to reflect inequities, as materials by and about women remain peripheral, and teaching approaches continue to favor predominantly male interactional styles. Girls’ self-esteem and confidence...particularly with regard to math and science, drop precipitously during their middle school years, narrowing their later choices of course work and career path.” The National Coalition of Girls’ Schools demonstrates that in coed classrooms girls often contend with: - fewer opportunities to participate, - pressure to conform to stereotypes, - lowered teacher expectations, - limited encouragement in math & science, - unequal sports opportunities, and - insufficient female role models. In contrast, at a girls’ school, they discover not only equal opportunity, but every opportunity. Girls experience the freedom to speak up, ask questions, debate issues, and defend points of view. Girls fill every role at an all-girls school; they are the speakers, thinkers, writers, singers, artists, scientists, athletes, actors, and leaders. Graduates of girls’ schools are more motivated and have higher aspirations than their peers at coeducational schools.

    College Prep

It’s a pleasure to introduce you to College Prep, a community of learners who engage deeply with big ideas and the craft of scholarship. Tucked into a glen in the Rockridge neighborhood of Oakland, our informal and welcoming campus provides an educational home for a lively and talented community of students and teachers. Conversations that start in the classroom spill over into the courtyard; curiosity leads from one insight or question to the next. Our students discover and develop their intellectual and creative voices in an environment where high standards are the norm and the spirit of inquiry is palpable. College Prep students come to the school from over fifty different middle schools to learn with and from each other. Guided by inspiring teachers and mentors, they create a vibrant community that is rooted in shared values of kindness, respect, and a willingness to learn from the perspectives of others. They care about each other and the broader world in which we live. College Prep’s educational results go far beyond impressive college outcomes. Our graduates shine in their intellectual resilience, deep sense of interconnectedness, and optimistic appreciation of possibility. We invite you to visit us and experience College Prep first-hand. At College Prep we believe in the foundational importance of scholarship, the value of dialogue, and the need for academically curious young people to belong to a kind, creative, diverse, and joyful community. We challenge our students to engage deeply in learning, appreciate one another, and grow into adults who are intellectually adventurous, ethically sure-footed, and generous of heart and spirit.

    Escuela Bilingüe Internacional

Escuela Bilingüe Internacional provides an excellent Spanish-English bilingual education based on the highest international academic standards in an environment that thrives on diversity, fosters global citizenship, and develops the character necessary to recognize cultural uniqueness as the touchstone of our common humanity. In 2006, a small group of committed parents and professional educators dreamt of providing their children with an outstanding bilingual education based on the best teaching and learning practices from around the world. They valued the immense cognitive, social and cultural benefits of multilingualism and wanted their children to be engaged members of both the Spanish and English learning communities. But, with no Spanish-English independent schools in the Bay Area and no Spanish-English bilingual programs beyond 5th grade at the time, they could not find a program like the one they imagined. Then, inspired by their vision, EBI’s founders decided to build a dual immersion school for students from pre-kinder through 8th grade that would prepare them in Spanish and English for the highest academic levels in all disciplines. Diversity, multiculturalism and inclusivity are deeply integrated into the foundation of our educational model and school community. They are at the heart of our mission and reflected in our daily interactions. Our International Baccalaureate curriculum is built on many perspectives that enable our students to understand and appreciate a variety of worldviews. The families at EBI form a strong and supportive community. Their commitment to each other and to the school is one of the unique qualities of attending EBI. Our families play an integral part in the school’s development as well as help the school meet its educational, socio-cultural and fundraising goals.

    Oakland Hebrew Day School

Oakland Hebrew Day School is a Modern Orthodox Jewish Day School that welcomes families from the diverse Bay Area Jewish community. Our immersive curriculum, which takes an integrative approach to Judaic and general studies, prepares our students for achievement in secondary school and beyond. Our goal is to foster the moral, emotional, spiritual, and intellectual development of our students, giving them a love of learning and supporting a strong sense of Jewish identity. Through meaningful Jewish experiences, OHDS connects students to their heritage, traditions, and community, resulting in graduates who are empowered and literate Jews. We embrace the State of Israel and inspire in our students a connection to Israel and its people, as well as a sense of responsibility for their welfare. We instill the Middot (moral character) and critical thinking skills necessary for our students to become engaged Jewish members of tomorrow’s global community. For over two thousand years the Jewish tradition has leveraged human communication as a powerful tool in the search for intellectual truth, ethical community and spiritual connection. Through discussion and productive argument, the Jewish learner builds skills, knowledge and understanding. Through the power of conversation, the Jewish learner is open to the perspectives of others, while developing the ability to articulate and express his or her own unique insights. Through lively discourse, the Jewish learner experiences the joy of connection to his or her identity, to others and to the very process of learning. In today’s world, the ability to communicate across differences is more important than ever. The power of Jewish learning can be applied to every aspect of the learning experience, from Torah to mathematics, from art to historical analysis and beyond. The benefits of Jewish learning reach far beyond the classroom, supporting young people to engage the complexity of their world with both mind and soul.
