Mae Carden established the first CARDEN SCHOOL® in 1934 at 24 East 68th Street in New York City. She demonstrated that children can gain an understanding of their own language and attain the ability to use it correctly when reading, listening, speaking, or writing. Her goal was to teach children to think; her main techniques were analysis and rhythm. Her educational philosophy and teaching techniques became an integral part of the CARDEN METHOD®. Teachers, students, and parents often shorten the name of this interrelated, eclectic group of approaches to learning. They call it Carden. The CARDEN METHOD® is a vital educational philosophy with proven teaching techniques applied to a curriculum concerned with the development of the whole child. The Carden curriculum begins with three-year-old children and continues through middle school, each level reinforcing and building upon the strengths gained by the student during the previous year. The Carden curriculum stresses mastery of content and the development of analytical thinking and problem solving skills. Using a highly individualized approach, Carden meets each learner’s particular needs. Children receive sound, well-rounded education they need to realize their full potential in life. Carden believes that life is a joy, and so should be learning. This attitude promotes a life-long love of learning among Carden students. The Carden curriculum includes language arts – a systematic teaching of phonics, reading, spelling, writing and grammar – mathematics – a depth of understanding with the teaching of arithmetic skills – science, history, foreign languages (French and Latin), physical education, computer skills, geography and character development. It is a rich and extensive program. Additionally, Carden offers a cultural program which engenders appreciation of art and music. A drama program affords participation for every student. A guidance program develops the student by awakening each child to ethical and social values. The emphasis of our program is the development of the whole child. Inherent in the Carden Philosophy of Education is character development that focuses on high standards of personal behavior, mutual respect, self-discipline, mental and physical stamina, and self-confidence. The goal of Carden School is an educated and self-reliant individual. The School holds to Miss Carden’s dictum, “Real education develops sound judgment and requires practical application of knowledge in all aspects of learning and in every phase of life.” Carden School of Fresno teachers have received certification in the Carden Method through course work provided by the Carden Educational Foundation. New teachers receive on-site training and coaching by experienced teachers.

The mission of Fresno Christian Schools is to equip young people for life and service for Jesus Christ through biblical foundations, Christ-like character development, and academic preparation in partnership with the home and local church. The Bible is the inspired Word of God. It is the basis for teaching the faith, giving direction to one’s life, and training a person in right living. (II Timothy 3:16) Therefore, on this basis the philosophy of Fresno Christian Schools is grounded in the following beliefs: The home, church and school should complement each other in promoting the student’s spiritual, academic, moral, psycho-social and physical growth. At school, the teacher represents the extension of authority and discipline as an agent of the parent. God has given differing abilities to each student. It is the teacher’s responsibility to challenge each student according to this ability and seek to develop the student’s full potential. The student’s home, church and school experiences and training should be a preparation for a life of fellowship with God and of service to others. Students should be encouraged to become spiritually mature and grow into Christ-likeness. Learning involves interaction between people, and that a well-rounded education involves exposure to a variety of cultures, ideas, and issues, all of which are to be interpreted by the light of God’s Word. Every teacher should participate in professional growth for the purpose of improving the program of the school while fulfilling its mission.

Samuel Augustus Maverick is our namesake. Born in South Carolina, S. Maverick moved to Texas where he became a lawyer after graduating from Yale University. He has many credits to his name, some include signing the Declaration of Independence for the state of Texas, being the mayor of San Antonio in addition to also owning a cattle ranch. Samuel didn't find it necessary to brand his cattle. When other Cattleman would come across unbranded cows they called them “Mavericks”. This is how the phrase was coined... do to Samuel Augustus Maverick’s independently-minded thinking. Maverick Prep Private School for Gifted Dyslexic Students' mascot has aptly been determined to be a “Maverick.” The Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines maverick as “an independent individual who does not go along with a group or party.” A maverick is “a person who refuses to follow the customs or rules of a group.” Now maverick is most often used to speak of a person who thinks and acts in an individual or independent way. They often behave differently from the customary manner. Maverick Prep's concept is developed on a model that is different from the traditional public and private school, in that every single student learns at his or her own pace and in his or her own way. Maverick Prep celebrates the unique and individual manner of instructing and learning and uses the Mavericks to lead the way. A Maverick will think deeply, think independently, learn to value the contributions of each other, and work to develop a positive future for their generation and other individuals the Mavericks encounter. Mavericks are “doers.” Individuals who “do” through problem-solving, hands-on activities, creating and developing, defending and justifying. At Maverick, learning is not a passive experience, but rather a learning by doing experience. This is a powerful model that will develop strong, independent, capable “doers.”

San Joaquin Memorial High School is a Catholic, co-educational college preparatory high school owned and operated by the Diocese of Fresno in the heart of the San Joaquin Valley. Founded under the inspiring leadership of the late Most Reverend Philip G. Scher, our school has the distinction of being the first Diocesan Catholic High School in the Monterey-Fresno Diocese. San Joaquin Memorial was named to honor those men and women from the San Joaquin Valley who gave their lives in the service of our country during World War II. Classes started in the fall of 1945, just as construction was completed on the first three buildings. Construction of the fourth and fifth buildings was completed a short time later, with classes open the following year. San Joaquin Memorial High School was then operated by the Sisters of the Holy Cross and the Brothers of the Christian Schools, with both orders sharing the governance for more than 40 years.

Beginning with infants, we work tirelessly to build a foundation of learning that will help your child succeed in elementary school. Our programs are defined by research-based curriculum and individualized learning experiences. Through nurturing dedication, our teachers guide your child toward reaching milestones and achieving success. As a STEM school, science, technology, engineering, and math are part of everything we do in the classroom. And a robust, purposeful daily schedule enhances learning experiences. In La Petite Academy's early education programs, our STEM-inspired curriculum integrates the core principles of science, technology, engineering, and math throughout classroom areas and daily routines. This connects academic skills to practical real-world applications, so learning becomes meaningful to children's everyday lives. STEM learning encourages innovation, critical thinking, problem-solving skills, and creativity, resulting in a capable, multi-faceted child. Through STEM, children build the skills necessary to navigate the world around them. Making connections between diverse skills and concepts is the way children learn best.
