Our company was founded in 1939 by David Dodd, Sr., a retired Methodist Minister. Rev. Dodd became involved in the pest control business by helping his fellow man. Times had been hard in the 1930’s and a man from up north was passing through looking for work to feed his family. He called upon Rev. Dodd for help and since he had been trained in pest control, Rev. Dodd suggested they open a pest control business- thus, Carolina Chemical and Pest Control was born. In 1951, David Dodd, Jr. assumed full time management responsibilities of the company, moving the company headquarters to Monroe, NC, where the company is still located today and remains Union County’s leading pest control service. In 1940, Boyce Black founded a one man termite control company. It consisted of a little, green 1940 Ford car that pulled a treating unit behind it in a little green trailer.
In 1956, Mr. Black incorporated the company and named it Southern Pest Control, Inc.
He operated under that name until 1966 when he sold Southern Pest to an employee and founded Southern Termite Control, Inc. He was the sole owner and Chief Executive Officer until his death in 1986. Mr. Black loved the pest control business and serving his many loyal customers! He passed away with a heart attack on a Friday afternoon while in his office working. He was 78 years old.
His grandson, James Boyce Black, Jr. (Jon) had the opportunity to work with his grandfather during summer vacations for several years. By watching his grandfather, Jon learned the value of hard work and dealing honestly with people in every phase of life and business.
When Jon finished college, he purchased the assets of Southern Termite Control, Inc., formed his own company and named it Black Pest Control, Inc. in honor of his grandfather, Boyce Black.
Black Pest Control, Inc., operated for 20 years, growing by leaps and bounds. In 2008, the company was restructured and renamed Black Pest Prevention, LLC. Jon Black is the Chief Executive Officer and Nicole Carpenter, great granddaughter of Boyce Black and niece of Jon Black, was named President of the company in 2014. She graduated from N.C. State and joined the company in 2011.

Before entering the bug business, Ryan Hahn and BJ Bacha worked together at My Gym Children's Fitness Center here in Charlotte. Ryan owned the franchise and hired BJ as a part-time employee in late 2006, and by the end of 2007, BJ was promoted to director. Through teamwork, trust, and a focus on customer service, they realized that they work well together. It was January of 2008 when they hired Carl Giles to operate their Karate program. Over the next couple of years, they worked collectively to bring joy to children and their families through classes, camps, and birthday parties.
After a successful partnership, they decided that they wanted to provide more services to families in Charlotte. The idea for mosquito control came when they noticed children coming to class in the spring and summer with huge bites all over their legs. In late 2009, Ryan and BJ brought the Mosquito Authority franchise to Charlotte. The first person that they hired was, of course, Carl Giles. Over the past several years, the team has grown, but the core has remained the same.
In 2015, they hired Patrick Helms to help meet the requests of Mosquito Authority customers regarding treating other pests.
