With over 25 years in the interior design industry, Cathy brings a wealth of personal experience and practical knowledge to every project she undertakes. From yacht interiors, to award winning hospitality renovations, storefront visual displays, government projects and residential interiors, Cathy has worked around the US and the Caribbean. At age 18, Cathy began in her career working in visual display for McRae's Department Stores and Foxmoor Casuals in Pensacola, Fl. Once married, she moved to San Diego, CA where Cathy continued in visual display working for "The Bed & Bath Company”. Then, she started an interior design firm, “Sand & Sea Interiors”, specializing in yachts and commercial design. With a move to Texas she started “Cathy Walsh Interiors”, a firm focused on continuing in commercial and entering into residential design. Another move east brought her to Virginia Beach, where she worked as a Design Consultant for Blaney's and JC Penney Custom Decorating. After a brief stay in Key West, a move back to Virginia Beach brought Cathy to Guy's Inc., a boutique upholstery house in Norfolk, VA where she was the Lead Designer. It was here that she earned her reputation as an elite designer capable of tackling any project. In 2004, due to family needs, Cathy left Guy's Inc and formed a new interior design company, CWI...Designs for Living. I wanted to make it possible for the family who just sent their last child off to college and finally have the time to do something for themselves. I’m Michelle Nettles and I’ve been designing for over 20 years.
I’m different than any other designer I know, in my background, my creative process, and the way I do business. I entered college as a major in biology, but ultimately spent 16 years teaching high school physics and biology and got my M.Ed. before getting a bachelor’s of fine art degree in interior design. Where most designers are right brain heavy, I like to say my brain is firing on all cylinders! Great design requires a balance of analytical skills, precise math, and great communications with you, and all the people on your project, to get your project finished on budget and on time.
With a solid foundation in all things design, expect meticulous attention to detail, exceptional customer service, and a fun, positive design process. I know you’ll find me to be creative, detail oriented, and able to explain exactly why I make the design decisions I make. I believe the job of a designer is not just to make things look nice. Instead, one should strive to create a space that not only looks great, but also makes sense for the people that live in it. A well designed space will be functional, possess proper flow and organization, and most importantly, reflect the personalities of the people that occupy it.
I hold an Associates of Applied Science Degree in Interior Design and have been working as a designer since 2012. Additionally I have a Certificate in Green Design and am a Certified Occupied Staging Specialist. I am a member of the Tidewater Community College Interior Design Advisory Committee and a member of the Oceanview Business Association. In the spring of 2019 I joined the faculty of Tidewater Community College as an adjunct professor in their Interior Design program. Additionally, I have been a design mentor for the Tidewater Builders Association Dreaming of Design Contest and worked on hand renderings for Homearama.
