The award-winning family lawyers at Livesay & Myers, P.C. represent clients throughout Northern Virginia.
Our size and resources allow us to match you with a family law attorney perfectly suited to meet your needs. Whether you are looking for an aggressive attorney for a volatile divorce or heated custody battle, a more junior lawyer to handle a quick, cheap uncontested divorce, or an experienced attorney for an adoption or other family law matter—we can help.
A divorce can be a stressful experience—whether it’s contested or uncontested. The best divorce lawyers can alleviate some of the emotional burden. Our experienced attorneys can give you peace of mind, by providing a steady hand throughout settlement negotiations and, if necessary, trial. Our attorneys have years of experience with contested divorce cases under each of the fault-based grounds in Virginia, including adultery, cruelty (mental or physical) and desertion (actual or “constructive”). We also handle uncontested divorces, under the no-fault grounds of (1) separation for at least twelve months or (2) separation for at least six months, with a separation agreement and no minor children. For more information, see our Guide to Divorce in Virginia.
Nothing is more important than securing a custody and visitation schedule that is in your child’s best interests. Our attorneys are veterans of many tough custody battles, fighting on behalf of mothers, fathers and grandparents in custody cases across Northern Virginia. We have expertise both with initial custody determinations and also cases involving relocation of custodial parents or modification of prior court orders. For more information on Virginia custody and visitation law, including the types of custody in Virginia, the factors used by courts in deciding custody, modification, relocation and denial of visitation, see our Guide to Custody in Virginia.
Unlike many other states, Virginia does not have legal separations granted by courts. However, a married couple may enter into a separation agreement, stipulating that they will live apart and divide their property and debts in a certain way. These agreements usually resolve any other outstanding issues, such as child custody and visitation, child support and spousal support. With such an agreement in place, once the parties have separated and lived apart for six months (with no minor children) or twelve months (with minor children), either party may then file for divorce on the ground of separation. Entering into a separation agreement without the advice of experienced counsel can result in a deal with terrible, long-lasting financial and legal consequences. Make sure your interests are protected—never sign a separation agreement without at least reviewing it with an experienced family law attorney. For more information, see our Guide to Separation in Virginia.
Our attorneys handle every other type of family law matter in Virginia.

I have a Law and Mediation practice that helps clients find collaborative solutions to separation, divorce and other family matters.
Throughout my life I have had an interest in the complexity of family relationships. My undergraduate major was in psychology and I focused on family and child development. One of my first professional jobs was working at a Family Service Center on a military base assisting service members and their family members with problems such as relocation, marital separation, financial support, and parenting. It was fulfilling to help troubleshoot issues, identify resources and help these families while in transition.
During this time, I was trained as a family mediator and began working with parties mediating their disputes. I obtained my law degree to better understand the legal implications involved when families separate. I then began learning the practice of family law and representing clients in various processes.
For the first thirteen years of my law career I developed a mediation practice, while representing clients in negotiation and litigation. Since my passion is helping people resolve issues out of court, I transitioned to a practice dedicated solely to settlement agreements and parenting plans.
Approximately fifty percent of my current work is representing a client in settlement negotiations via collaborative divorce or more traditional negotiation. The other fifty percent of my time is working as a Mediator a neutral facilitating settlement discussions with both parties present.
I frequently attend trainings and meetings with other collaborative divorce professionals and have developed a network of professionals that I can refer clients to. These other professionals can work in a respectful and productive manner assisting a couple with various aspects of their settlement (i.e., financial specialists, child specialists, divorce coaches, and mortgage brokers).
I appreciate the opportunity to work with clients and professionals who are interested in working on an out-of-court settlement with a quality resolution that will serve the parties over time legally, financially, emotionally and otherwise.

I am attorney Aaren Lane Gibson. From my Arlington office, I am proud to provide personal, responsive service to individuals and families throughout the neighboring areas of Virginia. From divorce to custody disputes and much more, I am here to guide you through your family law case with compassion and skill.
I’m not aloof, intimidating or too busy to get to know you and your concerns. On the contrary, I value my clients and the relationships I develop with them, and I enjoy sharing myself with those I serve.
When I’m not at work, I enjoy spending time with my longtime boyfriend, Jason, and my two turtles, Chompers and Desi. I’m also an avid sports fan who is particularly fond of the San Francisco Giants and the Golden State Warriors.
When founding my Arlington law firm, I wanted to honor the man who helped raise me since I was two years old: my stepfather. The “Lane” in The Lane Law Firm P.C. is his last name, which I am proud to use.
My office is located two blocks from the Rosslyn Metro station, making it very convenient for clients who use public transportation. For those who choose to drive, the office building has a parking garage.
Aaren Lane Gibson earned her law degree from Georgetown University Law Center in 2005. While there, she was a Notes and Articles Editor on the Georgetown Journal of International Law, and on the Academic Committee of the Black Law Students Association. After graduation, she worked for Joseph and Mische, P.C., where she practiced family law exclusively until opening her own practice in 2011.
Prior to law school, Aaren earned her Bachelor of Arts degree from Oberlin College in 2001. She majored in Politics as well as Law and Society, with minors in Economics and English. She earned the Jerome Davis Research Award while there.
Aaren continues to practice exclusively in the area of family law, dealing with matters ranging from divorce and equitable distribution, to pre- and post-nuptial agreements, and all matters relating to children, including custody, support and visitation.

Crouch & Crouch, PLLC is a law firm in the Courthouse neighborhood of Arlington, Virginia, near Washington, DC, working throughout Northern Virginia in all areas of Family Law, legal ethics and malpractice cases, Collaborative Law, and wills. Interstate and international family law cases are a particular field of expertise.
Crouch & Crouch primarily serves Northern Virginia (Fairfax, Arlington, Loudoun, Prince William, Stafford, and Fauquier Counties) and the cities of Alexandria, Falls Church, and Fairfax. However, very important family law, ethics, and malpractice cases take us to other parts of Virginia. In interstate and international family law, clients and attorneys from all over the world consult with us, usually in cases that are partially in Virginia courts or involve Virginia law or the Hague Convention on International Child Abduction.
John Crouch is experienced in all four ways of resolving family law issues: negotiation, collaboration, mediation, and litigation. In 1995 he joined and expanded the firm's interstate and international family law practice, and its emphasis on diplomatic, military, civil service and international-organization employees. Having taken every class that William & Mary's law school offered in wills, estates and related tax issues, he added that work to his practice, starting with divorced people and diplomatic families and the specific concerns they face when making their wills and naming guardians and trustees for their children.

Lawyers in Northern Virginia and Washington DC.
We understand that each legal matter is unique and requires an individualized approach, specialized expertise, and an ability to adapt to your situation.
Whether your issue requires a few hours of our attention or a few years, we will always work to give you practical solutions and honest advice.
To determine the most practical and efficient solution, we help you analyze the following factors to determine the best way to proceed:
- Harm you suffered (your damages);
- Likelihood you will win (the merits of your case);
- Cost to recover your damages (time, emotional, and financial); and
- Likelihood of collecting your damages from the opposing party if you win.
We are experienced at helping clients understand their legal options. If your case looks very promising, that is what we will tell you. If your case looks to be very challenging, that is what we will tell you. Most cases are somewhere in the middle, so we will help you assess your situation and understand how our lawyers can help you achieve a desirable outcome.
Too often, people forgo adequate legal counsel because they cannot find an appropriate attorney to help them navigate our legal system. No legal matter is trivial -- especially if this is your first substantial encounter with our legal system.
We are willing to assist clients who may need alternative financial arrangements. Whether your legal need is small or complex, call today to find out how SKL can assist you.
