I began my journey into the world of dogs at Holly Ridge Manor in Virginia Beach. That is where Dash, My black Cocker Spaniel and business mascot came into my life.
Once I moved back I knew I wanted to continue working with animals so I worked in the salon at Petsmart in Clarksville. It was there that I learned to groom, and when I graduated in 2007, I decided I wanted to have my own place.
I began Pawsitively Dogs Grooming in 2008 and now have the opportunity to share my love of animals with my clients and pet owners all over the Kentuckiana area.

Our success is measured in the number of dogs, cats and horses we save – through adoption or placement in another rescue, or those who are returned to their owners.
In 2020, 5,508 dogs, cats and horses ultimately were adopted. Thanks to our amazing supporters, 3,286 cats, 2,150 dogs and 72 horses found new homes. This includes 90 animals who were transferred out to other rescues.

When I started a family with my Yorkie Mercedes in 2007, I didn’t know much about how to care for a dog. But, like a nervous new father, I wanted to give her everything she could ever need and more.
When Mercedes was a puppy, she was kind of a tom boy. Imagine the cutest little fur ball frantically slinging dirt into the air, trying to get under the fence to whatever enticing bird or squirrel was on the other side.
Needless to say, she got dirty fast. But I didn’t want to change her behavior. I just wanted to help her stay clean and healthy, and preferably a little less smelly.

St. Matthews Animal Clinic is a special place—with lots of special people, including our staff of five experienced veterinarians who are passionate about pet care! The clinic was founded by Dr. Bruce Catlett, a man who was very dear to his clients because of his willingness to help everyone who came to the clinic. He was known for his big heart and his passion. Although Dr. Catlett passed away in 2001, he is still an inspiration and a reminder of the clinic’s long-term commitment to the community and to the region’s animals.
Dr. Mike Schardein bought the clinic in 2002. Since then, the facility has been extensively updated with ultrasound equipment, laser therapeutics, and advanced post-surgical facilities. We still focus on providing the kind of caring service that Dr. Catlett modeled. We want to stay in touch and know how our patients are doing, and we try to accommodate emergency situations through our later hours.

After being active in the medical field in New York, NY and Los Angeles, CA, Hal and Ellen Kapen retired to Louisville, KY to open Royalton Kennels in 1988. Our family and locally owned five-acre dog paradise in Fern Creek has been in business for over 30 years.
The Kapens have had family pets since 1970, acquiring their first show dog in 1982. Since 1983, their family has shown Rhodesian Ridgebacks in AKC conformation and obedience events. In 1990, one of their dogs was the #1 Ridgeback in United States conformation events!
We're active members of the Louisville Kennel Club, the Pet Care Services Association, the Rhodesian Ridgeback Club of the United States, and the American Boarding Kennel Association. We are also a member in good standing of the Louisville Better Business Bureau.
Hal has passed away some years ago, but Ellen has thrown herself into caring for all the animals in Royalton Kennels herself. She resides on the boarding kennel premises, so you can rest assured your pets will receive the love and attentive care they deserve. As retired nurse we can provide insulin to dogs that require it for a small additional fee.

Our family has loved and cared for dogs all of our lives. We hated leaving our fur babies alone at home, staring at the door waiting for us to return.
