The Maryland criminal justice system can be complex, intimidating, and unforgiving in the absence of experienced legal counsel. Investigative agencies and prosecutors have a tremendous amount of resources at their disposal, and you should expect the government to exercise all of those resources in order to obtain a conviction. If you are facing criminal charges, it is in your best interest to contact a Maryland criminal lawyer. Such an individual is specifically trained in crafting legal defenses and advising individuals on the most appropriate course of action to take with respect to criminal charges.
The immediate consequences of a conviction might include fines or imprisonment, but it is important to understand that those may not necessarily be the only ramifications. More specifically, a criminal conviction can entail a variety of collateral consequences. For instance, certain offenses may result in the loss of professional license, while others may jeopardize a person’s ability to secure a loan or obtain employment. Moreover, a criminal conviction invariably entails a certain stigma, which can jeopardize relationships with family members, friends, and professional acquaintances. An experienced Maryland criminal defense attorney will have handled a myriad of criminal cases, and as such, will have a strong familiarity with what a person is going through when facing criminal charges. Moreover, a Maryland criminal lawyer will understand the legal strategies that can be utilized as a way of minimizing the potential for conviction.

If you have been charged with a crime, now is the time to call a lawyer. It is important to have an attorney represent you from the start. There will be important stages early in your criminal case where an attorney can step in to limit the information that the police can get from you, fight to prevent evidence from being taken, and work to limit the initial charges you face. We can also help you with preliminary stages of your case, like the arraignment, and help you understand how your case will proceed.
In your case, there might be many ways to challenge the testimony and evidence against you. If you speak to the police, they can then turn around and use what you say against you. Regardless of your guilt, the police are not on your side. Some defenses challenge the fact that a crime was committed at all by arguing that the facts do not amount to the legal definition of a crime. Other defenses challenge whether they arrested the right person or whether you had an alibi. These defenses can become more difficult if you speak to the police.
If you are in police custody, you have the right to have an attorney present if you are being questioned. This is right one of your “Miranda rights,” which also include the right to remain silent. Anything you say during an interrogation can be used against you, and police often use questioning as a way to get additional information from defendants who might not understand their rights. Many arrests lead to coerced guilty pleas and other unjust admissions at this stage. When you are being questioned, you should politely decline to answer any questions until your lawyer is present.
Criminal charges in Maryland can be extremely serious. If you are convicted of a crime, you could face long-term penalties, such as fines that could take years to pay off or jail time that could mean months or years in lockup. If you have been charged with a crime, it is important to work with a criminal defense lawyer.
Throughout the case, our lawyers will also advocate for you in negotiations with the prosecution that could result in charges being dropped or dismissed. We might also be able to arrange a plea agreement that could reduce the charges and penalties you face. In many cases, we might even be able to get charges dropped in exchange for community service, anger management, substance abuse treatment, and participation in other rehabilitative programs.

"Thank you for all the time and effort that you put into defending my case. You were willing to fight for me when nobody else would believe my story, and you did not back down from the prosecutor. Another lawyer would have urged me to plead guilty, but you were willing to fight for me, and in the end justice was served. I appreciate everything you did and wish you all the best."- Fred D.

William A. Stavros is a lawyer who understands that good people can sometimes make mistakes that land them in court. Some may have been falsely accused. Others may have been injured by the negligence or intentional acts of others. In all of these situations, Mr. Stavros empathizes with his clients’ fears and concerns about their future. He works hard to get the best possible results for each and every one of his clients. Being charged with a crime, a DUI/DWI or a serious traffic violation is extremely stressful. The prosecution (government/state) brings sophisticated resources to build their case against you. Getting an experienced Maryland criminal lawyer involved as soon as possible is the best way to protect yourself so you can work towards moving past your charges and on to a better future. A serious personal injury caused by another is also an immediate call to action. Insurance companies have substantial resources at their disposal to protect their own interests. Failing to retain an experienced and skilled attorney as soon as you are able after a serious injury can lead to problems that may compromise your claim. Attorney William A. Stavros serves the entire Eastern Shore through his office in Centreville, Maryland. He serves the entire Baltimore Metropolitan area and surrounding counties, including the Maryland D.C. suburbs from his office in Towson, Maryland.
William A. Stavros is an aggressive attorney who is dedicated to protecting and enforcing the rights and interests of his clients through personalized representation. He offers his clients substantial courtroom litigation experience gained by representing thousands of people in court over the past twenty four years. He represents clients in both the State and Federal Courts and is admitted to practice in the State of Maryland, the U.S. District Court for the District of Maryland, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit, and the U.S. Supreme Court.

When you have a legal problem, a lukewarm response could mean losing the freedom, compensation and justice you need. Instead, you need and deserve a forceful attorney who will stand firmly in your corner and fight for your best interests. That fighter is me, attorney Gary S. Bernstein. I do not accept the status quo, and I never back down from a challenge. I am the type of lawyer who opposing counsel does not want to confront because when I take a case to court, I put the full force of my knowledge and over four decades of legal experience to work at every turn.
People don’t hire a law firm to go to court for them, they hire an attorney, and that’s exactly what you’ll get when you contact my law office, Gary S. Bernstein, P.A.
In addition to personally handling your case, you can expect complete honesty from me – even if you don’t like the answer I’m giving you. I pride myself on laying out all of my client’s options and honestly indicating which one I think makes the most sense for their situation. Not every case is winnable, but I will use every resource I have at my disposal to minimize a sentence and the collateral consequences from a conviction.
A lot of people think that taking a plea deal is the best approach to resolving a criminal matter, but this couldn’t be further from the truth for a lot of people. While it may resolve matters quickly, it’s important to know that police and prosecutors aren’t looking out for your best interests. A plea deal can still result in negative consequences that can have a lasting impact on your life and rights.
I am not simply looking for the easy way out; I am looking for the best possible outcome. I will look at your case from every angle, scrutinize every detail to get to the bottom of what really happened, and will develop a strategy that truly seeks the best outcome. A lot of lawyers won’t take this type of approach. They want to get out of court quickly or take a plea deal that may not be in their clients’ best interests, but not me. I know that sometimes the best place to get the best outcome is in the courtroom.
Whether I’m handling a first-time DUI charge, a drug trafficking case or other criminal matters at the state or federal level, filing an appeal before the Court of Appeals or the Court of Special Appeals, or representing a loved one or family in a wrongful death case, my approach will be the same: passionate, hard-hitting and with the goal to win.

Attorney Warren A. Brown was born into an America that had yet to fully open its reserve of social, economic, educational, and political rights to its African-American citizens; a time when a Black president, Black Miss America, Black heads of corporations, and Black people in any position of power was unimaginable. He was fortunate, however, to be surrounded by a community of honorable, hardworking, and determined people, and thus he never shied from entertaining lofty goals. One such goal was to become a lawyer, not for the money, rather, to fight for the weak and to claim membership in the “most noble profession”.
Upon graduating from Carnegie Mellon University in 1974 and Boston University School of Law in 1977, Warren Brown began to apply his trade with the Memphis Area Legal Services, Inc. (MALS) under, now mayor of Memphis, A. C. Wharton. Returning to his home of Baltimore in 1980, he first worked at the Legal Aid Bureau, then with the Office of the State’s Attorney for Baltimore City before settling in at the Federal Public Defender’s Office. In 1988, he opened the doors to his own Criminal Defense firm. Since that time, Warren Brown has tried both state and federal cases in Maryland, Virginia, Pennsylvania, New York, and Delaware.
An accomplished trial attorney, Warren Brown approaches trial work as an art; never leaving anything to chance. Though a successful and accomplished attorney by any standard, Warren Brown remains loyal to the legal reality that, “The truth, poorly represented, will lose”.
